Die Philosophie der DDR wird von vielen als reine Ideologie und Nicht-Philosophie im Dienste des Staates bewertet. Stefania Maffeis hingegen stellt die DDR-Philosophie differenziert dar: als Feld im Sinne von Pierre Bourdieu, das mit den politischen Instanzen auf komplexe Weise verwickelt war und sich erst unter bestimmten gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen und unter dem Einfluss von Personen, Positionen und Institutionen entfalten konnte. Die strukturellen und sprachlichen Transformationen der DDR-Philosophie werden am Beispiel der Nietzsche-Rezeption dargestellt. Schließlich nimmt die Autorin auch die Veränderungen infolge des politischen Umbruchs von 1989 in den Blick.

Hannah Arendt und ihre Schriften werden seit jeher als unkonventionell wahrgenommen, als disziplinär schwer einzuordnen. Sie haben breite Anerkennung in vielen verschiedenen Ländern und Sprachräumen erlangt und scheinen, sämtliche fach- wie kulturspezifische Grenzen zu überschreiten. Diese Studie zielt nicht darauf ab, derartige allgemeine Wahrnehmungen zu widerlegen oder zu bekräftigen. Sie reflektiert hingegen die materiellen Bedingungen dieser Wahrnehmungen, ihre performativen Funktionen sowie ihre historischen Transformationen. Im Zentrum der systematischen und genealogischen Rekonstruktion stehen Arendts Begriff des Politischen und die damit korrelierende öffentliche Figur Hannah Arendt. Beiden Ideen werden als Subjekte und Resultate der Interaktionsverhältnisse zwischen der Akteurin Arendt, ihren unterschiedlichen sozialen und epistemischen Kontexten sowie der Gemeinschaft ihrer Leser*innen und Konkurrent*innen betrachtet.

"Totalitäre Herrschaft gleich der Tyrannis trägt den Keim ihres Verderbens in sich. So wie Furcht und die Ohnmacht, aus der sie entspringt, ein antipolitisches Prinzip und eine dem politischen Handeln konträre Situation darstellen, so sind Verlassenheit und das ihr logisch-ideologische Deduzieren zum Ärgsten hin eine antisoziale Situation und ein alles menschliche Zusammensein ruinierendes Prinzip. Dennoch ist organisierte Verlassenheit erheblich bedrohlicher als die unorganisierte Ohnmacht aller, über die der tyrannisch-willkürliche Wille eines einzelnen herrscht. Ihre Gefahr ist, daß sie die uns bekannte Welt, die überall an ein Ende geraten scheint, zu verwüsten droht, bevor wir die Zeit gehabt haben, aus diesem Ende einen neuen Anfang erstehen zu sehen, der an sich in jedem Ende liegt, ja, der das eigentliche Versprechen des Endes an uns ist." Am Grunde des Denkens von Hannah Arendt liegen die Erfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Zwei Weltkriege und die Shoah haben Verwüstung hinterlassen, wo vorher die alten Welten der abendländischen Kultur bestanden hatten. Damit ist auch der Glauben an humanistische Werte, der Glaube daran, dass der Mensch dem Menschen kein Wolf sein muss, in seinen Grundfesten erschüttert. Die Welt liegt in Trümmern und mit ihr die Menschen. Wie also weiter leben?

The text approaches the phenomenon of transnational migration movements in the globalized world as a question related to the specific borders and mobilities of philosophy. The circulation of philosophical ideas and subjectivities between different countries and languages is challenged as a form of transnational citizenship. This main thesis will be examined in the light of the building process of the concept of belonging in the political theory of Hannah Arendt in relation to her German and US-american audiences. I will first explain the approach of the transnational circulation of ideas as well as its presumption, the consideration of philosophy as a specific social practice. I will then explore the mutations of Arendt’s thinking on belonging along a close reading and a contextualization of some of her German and English texts. The contradictions in Arendt’s conceptualizations of the idea of belonging will be finally reexamined as practices of constructing transnational social and intellectual frames

This paper proposes a political understanding of human rights which allows not to dissolve the contradiction between the positive and the normative aspect entailed in the idea and the institution of human rights, but rather to keep them together dialectically. I discuss the relationality of human rights through Hannah Arendt’s idea of the right to have rights and I develop it further through Jacques Rancière’s concept of subjectivity. This allows me to explain the dialectic of the human rights as a conflict between existing positive rights, which assign specific subjects or groups to specific territories and legal spheres, and a universal claim of human equality and freedom, which is challenged from excluded, unclassified social groups and which is performed in situations of protests. I further explain the radical democratic potential of human rights on the paradigmatic case of struggles for a right to global movement and to political belonging. In order to grasp the complexity of those subjectivity practices, I distinguish four different dimensions of subjectivity: a legal and political one, an affective one, an epistemic one and finally an ethical transcultural one.

In order to properly articulate a philosophy of globalization – in its objective and subjective sense -, the article presents the transnational circulation of ideas as an adequate alternative to the so-called global political philosophy and to macrological, structuralist perspectives of postcolonial philosophy. The first two chapters explain the methodological and theoretical frame of the transnational circulation of ideas. They also underline its performative and pragmatical understanding of philosophy. The third part of the article traces the development path of the idea of belonging in Hannah Arendt’s work in relation to different sociolinguistic spaces and historical contexts. This gives the opportunity, on one hand, to illustrate and to test the proposed model. On the other hand, Arendt’s understanding and practicing of belonging leads to an idea of philosophy as a transnational form of citizenship, based on the translation between different languages as well as on the reflection upon the interlink between different subjects and spaces of knowledge.
